Exam Technique

    Applies to many exams...
  • Always go through the paper briefly at the start of the exam, so you know if there's any long questions at the end you need to leave time for, how many questions there are etc.
  • If the paper is divided into sections, work out how long you need to spend on each section.
  • Answer the questions in any order, starting with the easiest/shortest.
  • Always show your working out to pick up a couple more marks.
  • If the question looks difficult, come back to it later.
  • If you can't do a question that requires a calculation, write down a formula or any working out - even if you can't do the question, you might still get a mark.
  • Remember you can draw diagrams to get your point across as well as just writing, even if it doesn't say in the question. This often works well and is quicker than writing.
  • Write one idea per mark. If it's a 3 mark question, put down three different ideas.
  • You don't need to answer in full sentences for a 1 mark question unless it tells you to.
  • If the question requires a long answer, always plan out your work first in bullet points or spider/bubble diagrams so you get all the ideas you can included in the right order. If you don't finish all your answer, don't cross through your diagrams/bullet points because then the examiner can see you had the ideas, just not enough time to get them down and you should get it marked, although you might not get full marks.
  • Go back through your paper at the end at least twice and read through your answers and re-read bits and pieces.
  • If you have time, check through spelling and punctuation.
