Holiday
Going on holiday? Even if you aren't, it might be a good idea to read this now, and then read it again when you actually are going!
Travelling abroad
- Remember to get any injections you might need from the doctor before you go. Ask about whether you need any or not before you go. You don't generally tend to need them when travelling in Western Europe or North America.
- Pack at least a week before. Then you can check and double-check you have everything.
- Don't carry loads of bags, just try to shove everything into one/two suitcases. A lot of bags etc. can take ages to find at the other airport.
- Try and leave some space in your bag/case. You'll probably pick up lots of things on holiday!!
- Keep half your money in your bag, and half on you (purse/small bag etc.) so if your case gets lost, you'll still have some money.
- Only change a bit of money at a time into the foreign county's currency because you might change too much, and sometimes there's a limit as to how much you can change back. Also, remember you can't change coins/small change back!
- Arrive in plenty of time to the airport/dock so you aren't rushed and you'll have a more pleasant journey.
- If you're staying overnight in a ship, I don't recommend sleeping on a top bunk bed! Sleeping on the bottom one was bad enough for me :(
- If it's a short plane journey, don't go to sleep on the plane coz you'll feel awful after!
- If your ears really don't 'pop', then don't pop them unless you're honestly deaf, coz it hurts soo much!!
- Don't eat anything when the plane's coming into land. It can choke you.
- Try and learn as much as you can about the country or area you're visiting. Then you have some idea about how to act, and what the people expect :D
- Phone up beforehand to check your mobile will work in the country you're travelling to, and ask if you
need a special pin code to use your phone or listen to voice mails.
Travelling within your country (by car)
- Make sure you have several different things to do for the journey (books, music, whatever)
- Try to keep the amount of luggage down!
- Remember sun cream, sun glasses, etc.
- Get yourself comfortable in the car, and take your shoes off etc.
- Make sure you have something to eat or drink either in the car or before you go.
- For journeys longer than a couple of hours, stop for breaks and stretch your legs.
Before you go
- Keep your room neat and tidy before you go - you'll be tired after the holiday and won't want to tidy as well as unpack!
- Make sure you don't leave any food or drink out that will go off.
- Check everything's locked up.
- It's a good idea to get someone to check the house every other day to see if everything's all right.
- Make sure you've arranged something for any pets (like catteries for cats, or arrange for a friend to take your hamster).
- Make a list of anything you think you might want to buy (e.g. presents/postcards for friends
Bon voyage!
