Pets & Babies
They both look adorable but can be a real pain, especially babies!
I've found that getting one Sim to look after the baby works best, or have the other Sim take over when they get back from work. If the baby cries, you can get it to sleep by Feeding, Playing and then Singing. If you get sick of your baby ignore it and it will get taken away by the social worker. I don't recommend getting a baby till your Sims are completely happy, with each other, any other members of the family, and their career (if they have one) and house. Babies take a lot of work and after a few days, when the baby becomes a kid, you really need to work on the relationship between it and its parents.
I think the best pet is either cat or dog, because they are more interesting, do more, and you don't have to feed them constantly. I would buy 1 pet at a time because they can be demanding. Buy the best bed and bowl for your pet, and if you get a cat buy some toys and a litter box. The litter box gets annoying after a while so when it gets full delete it and buy a new one.
Your dog needs to be house trained. To do this, every time it makes a puddle indoors scold it, and outdoors, praise it. If your dog picks a place outside to make a mess that's on a floor tile (e.g. patio/path) and not the grass, you need to delete that tile or your Sims will be forced to clean up the mess constantly. You can also train your dog in obedience (Sit & Stay) and tricks (train them until they learn how to do a trick, then make them perform it and move on to the next). When you enter your dog for pet shows, higher levels of obdience, tricks, and house training as well as good hygiene (use the dog bath) will make your pet more likely to win a prize.
Cats can learn to hunt, do tricks and have good obedience. However, hunting is a problem because you end up with these weird little white floaty things everywhere which are apparently dead mice (strange I know). Hunting can be annoying at times, but again it helps your pet to win a prize.
Buy a display cabinet for your prizes :) I have a pet room in my house with a dog bath, display cabinet, food bowls and a kennel (weird I know :P) If I had a cat, I'd have a room with bowls, bed, litter tray and some toys or something. It's easier then to remember where your pet's bed, food etc. is and you don't forget to feed/clean it etc.
