There are several different versions of this script, but my personal favourite is Katie’s because you can customise it more! Although full instructions are included in the download, I’ve had a lot of questions about it so I’ve written a tutorial on it :) You will need to be able to run php on your server to use this script, and be using FTP. This script has been made available for download with permission from Katie of luved.org. 1. Download the script here. You will need Winzip or similar to unzip it. 2. Create a folder called 'ask'. Upload all the files included in the zip file apart from readme.txt. 3. CHMOD your 'ask' folder to 777 (if you don’t know how to CHMOD, see one of my tutorials on it). 4. Go to http://your-site.com/ask/setup.php and check that it was installed successfully. It should say, "Installation Complete!". 5. Next, go to http://your-site.com/ask/askme.php and ask yourself a question to make sure it works. Go to http://your-site.com/ask/answer.php to 'answer' the question. The 'secret key' is askme. 6. Once you’ve checked the script works, in the Control Panel that you just logged into, click ‘Configuration’ and change your password straight away so that no one else can get into the script. 6. There are also a number of 'Optional' steps you can follow to integrate the script better into your site. Just refer to that part of the readme.txt file. 7. To change the text before the questions themselves (for example on mine, I have some 'rules' about questions I’m going to answer), open ask.php and customise to your heart’s content. You might want to include your site’s style sheet (if you have one) as well. If you do something wrong, just re-upload the original file. 8. To customise your Q&A script properly, I recommend that if you use external style sheets (those shown on my 'CSS Trick' tutorial), you insert this code into your stylesheet: Changing the table width (in the first line of code) will help your answered questions fit the page properly according to your layout. The rest of the CSS can be altered so the questions and answers (as well as tables and textareas etc.) fully match your site. Back | Forward Advertised |
