Greymatter is a blogging tool that allows visitors to comment on your blogs, vote, etc. It's also much easier than blogging manually. There are other downloads available that are similar to GM, but I think this is the most popular. However, before you start you need to check 2 things. 1, that you have a domain or are hosted at a domain that has CGI support. Ask your host/hostess if you're not sure. If you are hosted on a free server like angelfire.com or whatever, see my tutorial on 'Commenting' instead. 2, you aren't hosted by cyberpixels.com or any other hosts that don't allow GM. 1. Download this file and unzip using Winzip or a similar program. 2. In ASCII mode, upload all the files except installation.htm, manual.htm and gm-icon.gif into a new folder called greymatter. Then in Binary mode, upload gm-icon.gif. 3. Don't know how to CHMOD? Have a look at one of my CHMOD tutorials. CHMOD gm.cgi, gm-karma.cgi, gm-upload.cgi and gm-comments.cgi to 755, and CHMOD everything else to 666. 4. Make a new folder or directory in the greymatter folder and call it 'archives'. CHMOD to 777. 5. Login to Greymatter. Your URL will end in gm.cgi, so it might be http://your-site.com/greymatter/gm.cgi for example. The username is 'Alice' and the password 'wonderland'. 6. Go to 'Edit Authors', and fill out 'Register a new author' with your details. Give yourself full access, and press 'Create new author', or whatever it says. Then make sure you delete 'Alice', even if your name is Alice or whatever lol. 7. Then login again with your new username and password. You should be prompted to do this anyway :) Go to 'Configuration', ignore everything on the page and scroll down to the buttons at the bottom. Go to 'Diagnostics and Repair' > 'Perform Diagnostics and Repair'. If everything is okay, continue. If an error message appears, check your CHMODing, and also check the error message that appears to see what was wrong. 8. Go back to 'Configuration' and look at everything on that page, file paths etc. and make sure they all go to the right URL. They should all be ok so don't change anything unless you're sure it's wrong. 9. Go back to the main menu, and click the first, green, button which says 'Add a new entry', and then write a test entry and add it. Go to http://your-site.com/greymatter/? (or whatever the URL is, but it should have a '?' at the end) and comment on your entry to check that works too! 10. Ok, the hard part's over now - you can visit the more interesting GM tutorials such as Customising GM, etc. :) Yay you installed Greymatter! If this tutorial helped you, please link me on your site.
