FTP (WS_FTP)

Here's a guide to WS_FTP. If you're still stuck or need more info about something, e-mail me. Please wait for all the pictures to load before you start this FTP tutorial - they make everything much more clear!

*Note* The question I get asked most is, is the FTP program free? Yup, it sure is :) And it lasts forever too.*
REMEMBER THAT THE FTP MAY BE SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT WHEN YOU HAVE IT AS IT COULD BE A NEWER VERSION TO THE ONE SHOWN HERE :D

1. Go here, or if that doesn't work, go to download.com or google.com and search for 'WS_FTP Free Download'. If you do this, the first 4/5 steps might be different for you.
2. Fill out the form and submit to download the FTP.
3. Once downloaded, double click the icon and you'll come up with a box like this:

Fill in all the information you need to log in (shown in red). Your host should have given this to you. Then press 'Ok'.
4. If you've filled in all the information right, you'll be logged in. If not, make sure you've typed everything in right and try again.
5. On the right hand side, you'll see a column of yellow files and some notepad-type icons, or maybe a couple of files - this is your site. On the left hand side are all the files stored on your computer. Depending on your host, you may need to double-click a yellow folder to enter your site files. If you see a folder with your-site.com on it, double click it.

MAKING FOLDERS FOR YOUR SITE IN FTP

1. Now look at the image below to see how to make a folder:

2. Click the button marked 'Mk Dir' (the red number 1), and type in a file name (red #2). You might want to call your files, 'images', 'www', 'me', 'you' 'other', depending on what sort of site you have. Press 'OK', (red #3) and a yellow folder will appear on the right (press 'Refresh' if it doesn't). 3. Repeat this step until you have as many folders as you need. The reason for the folders is so you can keep everything organised, and so you don't lose/mix up/delete/have too many files all in one place. However, this is optional. If you have a really small site you might not want to use them :)
*Note* The address for the file will be http://your-site.com/foldername, so if you put a document in it it will be http://your-site.com/foldername/file.html. It sounds confusing but it's not, trust me!

MAKING PAGES FOR YOUR SITE

1. Once you have your folders, go into 'Notepad', which should be somewhere on your computer. Type this (or something similar) into a new document:

You can type whatever you want between the BODY tags.
2. When you've finished typing, you need need to save your file. Click File > Save as, then use the drop down menu with 'My Documents' on to first find your (C:) drive (as shown by the red ring on the image below). Then find 'Program Files' and double click (as shown by the second red ring below) Yours might look different if you have a different version of Windows:

3. When you're in your 'Program Files'' Ws_ftp folder and double click.
4. You might not have any files in there at the moment, but that doesn't matter. Make sure you select 'all files' on the 'save as type' menu (red ring below), and call your file index.html This is your splash (or front) page. You can call all your other files whatever you want - just make sure you call them whatever.html. Press 'save'.
*Note* Remember that if you call 2 files with the same name, the second file will replace the first one without any warning.

4. Right, now go back into your FTP. You might need to re-log in again, so do that if you need to. Your index.html file should appear on the LEFT hand side of your FTP (see red ring on pic below) if you did it correctly. You might need to press the 'refresh' button on the left to make it show. You'll probably only have 1 file, but after a while you'll build up a collection like mine (on the image).

5. Highlight your index.html file (click it once), and drag it over to the right hand side of your ftp (the other red ring) and let go. If you don't know what I mean by drag, it's like when you drag the clothes onto a cartoon doll on a cartoon doll maker. Make sure it doesn't go into any yellow folders!!
6. Get off your FTP, and go to your site address (like http://your-site.com for example). If your index page comes up, you've done it right!! Now follow the steps in this section again to make all your pages, using HTML etc. Don't forget to call them all something different .html, or they will overwrite each other.

UPLOADING AND USING IMAGES IN FTP

1. Open up the pic you need, and again drag it across to the right hand side of your FTP. Then drag it into your 'images' folder. (see picture below)

2. When you use the pic, you need to use the code <img src="http://your-site.com/images/yourpicture.gif"> because you put it into the images folder. If you don't put it into a folder, you can just put <img src="yourpicture.gif"> Remember things can get crowded and messy though if you don't organise your images.
