Tutorial Set > Making a Website. STEP 8: Creating an Index page

31. Now, ypu probably noticed that if you go to the URL star-girl.org, it comes up with what's called a 'splash page'. This is basically the main page of your site where all your visitors will go, and it may have things like a counter, your links, information about what you need to enter the site (e.g. Internet Explorer). So, go into your 'Site Manager', and directly underneath all the folders you made, there should be a page called 'index.htm'.

32. Click the 'Edit' icon next to it.
33. Now, you will already have Freeweb's standard text in there, so you will need to delete/edit parts of it so that it looks something like this:

34. There's a slight problem with that in that your visitors can't actually view any pages. So you'll need to make a link (as shown in step 7) to mysite.html. Yes, I know that page doesn't exist yet, but it will in the next tutorial :)

35. Once you've gone to File > Save, go to your site (e.g. http://freewebs.com/stargirlorg), and your index page should show up!
36. It's VERY IMPORTANT to remember that if you upload an index.htm, index.html or index.php file to your main directory (where you index.htm file is now), the new file will overwrite the old one and become the main page of your site so be careful. You can't have two index files, and you can't have two files with the same name unless they have different extensions, e.g. cat.html and cat.txt, or they are in different folders (e.g. /Me/biography.html and /You/biography.html).
