Writing Subpages

When writing subpages, here are a few things to bear in mind :)

  • Think of your audience when you write. Don't use words that are too hard to understand, but don't patronise them either.
  • Always read through the page when you've finished to check it makes sense. Get a friend to double check to make sure it looks okay for them, too.
  • Make your subpages a good length. People don't want a subpage with a couple of sentences, but they don't want a 1500-word essay either.
  • Think about how your page will be organised. Breaking up text using bullet points or paragraphs is always a good idea. Text alignment is also important.
  • Keep to one topic per page. If you talk about too many different subjects at once, it will be confusing and difficult for visitors to find again if they come back.
  • Make sure the text is easy to read, for example don't put bright pink text on a bright yellow background, etc.
  • Don't use any dialect words or slang that isn't used worldwide (for example, everyone knows what 'ok' means, but not everyone knows what 'cheeky' means).
  • Don't make your sentences too long.
  • Try and be original in style and content. Try not to re-write things that everyone has heard a million times before.
  • Write out your page in Word or something first so you can check for spelling mistakes etc.
  • Try to write in proper English, not LyKe DiS or something, because it's harder to read and people won't take you seriously.
  • Don't think you have to write a hundred subpages all at once - just do a couple at a time.
  • Never copy other peoples' written work, even if you intend to give credit for it. Using other peoples' ideas and giving them credit is usually acceptable :)
